News> Topballerz Sign First Player Kelvin Davis

For Kelvin Davis, the road to becoming a professional athlete was a long and arduous one. Kelvin, a standout high-school player from Waterbury, CT, recognizes the value of hard work, faith and battling adversity. Leaving Connecticut to pursue his dreams of playing collegiate ball, Kelvin traveled nearly across the nation to play for UTEP. After one uneventful year, Kelvin transferred to a junior college in Idaho where he led his team to a 30-7 record and a semifinal appearance in the NJCAA Tournament. Not only did Kelvin and his team make a deep run in the tournament, Kelvin was named the 11th BEST Junior College player in the Nation! In doing so, Kelvin began to receive numerous offers to play elsewhere and eventually transferred to San Diego State University.

Kelvin’s junior year was a productive and promising one. Entering his final season, the expectations surrounding Kelvin were high. Predicted to be a starter and an essential cog to the team’s success, Kelvin began to experience bouts of sickness and shortness of breath. After a series of tests, Kelvin was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma (a form of cancer). Rather than sitting back and complaining of his misfortune (which would have been understandable), Kelvin decided to take this news/disease on in the same manner he approached an opposing player with the ball: with tenacity, aggression and confidence that he would once again prevail.

Steve Fisher, San Diego State’s Head Coach at the time stated, "He never complains, never. He's never once said 'Why me?' I can't believe it, really. It's amazing to me. He just stayed with it and battled the whole time."

Kelvin was then required to endure 30 minutes of radiation treatment everyday as well as having a port inserted into his chest which he had to keep in when he eventually returned to the basketball court. Despite the nauseating chemotherapy medications coursing through his body, Kelvin would rush out of his treatments in hopes to get back onto the court, even it were only for a few minutes. Adversity like this typically knocks the wind out of a person and takes some time for them to recover and realize what they have to do…NOT for Kelvin. Rather, he flashed a smile, nodded his head as if he already understood what he needed to do and began to fight!

“I didn't think this could happen to me. Who does? But it did happen to me. The doctors told me the people who have a good attitude do really well. The ones who make excuses or feel sorry for themselves struggle. To me, this isn't that bad. Life knocked me down, but I got back up. I'm still here, still playing basketball” stated Kelvin.

Kelvin went on to receive a 6th year of eligibility from the NCAA and helped his team earn a trip to the coveted NCAA Final Four! In addition, Kelvin was one of twelve finalists for the V Foundation Comeback Award and was the recipient of the USBWA’s Most Courageous Award.

Kelvin is a knockdown shooter whom is also blessed with the athleticism that is oftentimes unparalleled. The Topballerz are beyond excited with the signing of Davis in that he fits their fast-paced, high-pressure style of play. “Kelvin is the type of player that can kill you from the outside, but as soon as the defender starts to overplay on the shot, he can go to the basket and posterize the help-side defender! He plays great defense, is a proven leader and has excelled at every level” stated Trevor Hairston (owner of the CT Topballerz). Director of Player Personnel, Andre Huston (also part of the coaching staff), chimed in with “Kelvin is a great player and not only that, a great person. He exemplifies the same core principles we have instilled within the Topballerz organization: passion, integrity, hard work and respect for the game and all others!”

Come watch Kelvin Davis and the rest of the Topballerz team start their season off against intra-division rival The New Jersey Express, November 12th at Albertus Magnus College!
