Topballerz Maintain Their Dominance Within the Northeast Division

This past Saturday, the Connecticut Topballerz returned home to play host to the NYC Thunder. After getting beat by 47 points the last time, the Thunder returned to Albertus Magnus College with whole new personnel in hopes to defeat the surging Topballerz. Boasting four new players that all had Division-1 experience and a few with NBA pedigree, the Thunder looked and played like a completely different team. This was not the team that the Topballerz had handled with ease earlier in the year, but rather a very dangerous and experienced team that had the players to create trouble for anyone.

The game started off with several turnovers by each team. It was obvious that nerves were playing a factor for both squads in the early minutes of the game as the guards for each team made several mistakes which led to easy baskets. After a quick timeout by the Thunder, both teams returned to the court and the Topballerz began to illustrate why they are the number one team in the Northeast Division.

Through some quality teamwork and passing, the Topballerz jumped out to a 17 point lead; sometimes extending the lead to 23 points. John Winchester got the Ballerz started with making some long range jumpers, Dale Saunders chipped in with a few jumpers and tip-ins himself and Bobby Moore was his usual self as he consistently got past the initial defender and penetrated the defense, therefore creating easy buckets/opportunities for his teammates. Entering into the half, the Topballerz looked very much in control of the game and would cruise to their 4th victory in a row.

However, the Thunder had other ideas and came out of the half playing inspired basketball. They crashed the boards and played tough, on-the-ball defense which led to several easy baskets for the Thunder. At one point, the Thunder had closed a 23 point gap to 5, when Topballerz Head Coach Jim Cornish called a much-needed teammate.

Coach Cornish settled the team down, made a few substitutions that would turn out to be key and sent the Ballerz back to the court. One of those key substitutions was spotlight player of the week, Jeff Johnson, whom picked up a few assists and 4 quick points. Additionally, the play of Roosevelt Lee at the end of the third quarter would be the determining factor in the game. With every run the Thunder made in the 3rd, Roosevelt had an answer for them. At one point, Roosevelt scored three straight “and-one’s” resulting in 10 points (one was a 4 point play) and helped once again, extend the Topballerz lead to 15. After the final “and-one” the Thunder were obviously frustrated and a lot of their fight/heart were taken away from them.

The Topballerz went on to win the game 127-110 and created a little more distance between them and the rest of the division. Not only are the Topballerz number one in their division, they continue to move up the National Rankings and are predicted to move up into the top ten yet again!
