With one game under their belts and a win against the two-time defending division Champion and nationally-ranked New Jersey Express, the Connecticut Topballerz returned to practice two days later. Though it would have been easy to sit back and relax, become complacent and over-indulge in the organization’s first win, the Topballerz knew and understood that the road to success was just beginning and much work needed to be done.
Throughout the practice week, the team went over game film, addressed the things they did well and most importantly, recognized the areas in which they could improve upon. Coach Maurice Williamson noted that “these guys could have come in and lost that hunger which drove them to a convincing first game win, but they didn’t. Each practice, the players have been working harder and going tougher at one another. You can just see the hunger in their eyes and the passion in their play. This team is special!”
Rebounds were fought for. Bodies often collided. Players dripped with sweat and players hit the floor diving for loose balls. The aforementioned hunger Coach “Mo” so admirably spoke about was evident with each practice. Every player not only displayed why they were the best to be picked for Connecticut’s very own professional basketball team, but also a drive and passion that is oftentimes unparalleled was seen by all. In saying so, one player stood out each day and has therefore been awarded by the Coaching Staff, the Topballerz very first “spotlight player of the week!” This player was none other than Dale Saunders!
“Dale brings an entirely different element to our team and organization than most players his size. He jumps out of the gym, he is fearless, he gives 100% on each and every play and he is supportive of his teammates. His smile, his style of play and his intensity are not only valuable to our team, but are contagious to the players around him. Every team has days whereas a few players come in and are dragging. However, with Dale, he doesn’t allow that to happen. Though he is not the most vocal person on the court, he definitely epitomizes the old adage of ‘leading by example.’ This is why Dale was a no-brainer pick for our very first spotlight player of the week” stated the Topballerz’ General Manager, John Scavuzzo.
Dale is a 6’7” ball-player that has the skills to play the three, four and five. His work ethic, athleticism and understanding of the game make him a diverse asset to any team. Residing in Waterbury, Connecticut, Dale played his collegiate basketball at the highly-touted Garden City Community College in Kansas. With hopes and aspirations of one day playing overseas or even in the NBA, Dale continues to do what he does best: work hard, encourage others, rebound and make opposing players’ lives on the court a living hell.
Congratulations to Dale!
